Nelson and Gamba named Athletes of the Week

November 13, 2018

Women’s basketball player, Tyleigha Nelson, and men’s soccer player, Bobby Gamba, have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 11.

Nelson, a fifth-year forward, had a strong performance for the Hurricanes on Saturday in Moncton, New Brunswick, when they defeated the Crandall Chargers by a score of 70-68; she scored 11 points and added 12 rebounds in the victory.

On Sunday, in Fredericton, she led the injury-riddled ‘Canes with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals in an 84-53 loss to the STU Tommies.

Nelson, 5’8”, is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and studying in the Sport & Leisure Management program.

Gamba, a first-year center-back, was a top performer for the Hurricanes at last week’s CCAA National Men’s Soccer Championship, hosted by Holland College at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall, PEI.

A goal in the Hurricanes third game at Nationals versus the STU Tommies helped the ‘Canes secure the victory in penalty kicks to finish the event in seventh.  For his strong play throughout the championship, Gamba was named to the tournament All-Star team.

The ‘Canes tournament included losses to eventual silver medalists, the Indiens d’Ahuntsic on Thursday, and the Capilano Blues on Friday.

Gamba, 5’11”, is from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and studying in the Sport & Leisure Management program.
